Marc Dickman

Dr. Marc Dickman, from Valdosta, Georgia, is a founding member of the acclaimed Jazz Studies Program at the University of North Florida. Dr. Dickman earned degrees from Troy State University, McNeese State University, and the University of North Texas. His versatility on euphonium, trombone, bass-trombone, and tuba in the classical and jazz styles places him in much demand in the United States.

At UNF he teaches applied low brass and jazz ensemble. His students have won awards in the jazz and classical areas. Dr. Dickman was a featured jazz artist at the 2000 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the 2001 ITEC in Lahti, Finland, the 2002 ITEC in Greenville, NC, and the 2004 ITEC in Budapest, Hungary, and the 2005 and 2008 U.S. Army Tuba Euphonium Conference.

 

Dr. Dickman is a founding member of the groundbreaking jazz ensemble, the Modern Jazz Tuba Project. The MJT Project has two critically acclaimed releases: "Live From the Bottom Line" and "Favorite Things." Marc's CD, "A Weaver of Dreams," is available at cdbaby.com and tubagear.com. It is the first jazz euphonium recording to be available through popular services such as iTunes and Real Networks. Dr. Dickman has performed in the following countries: USA, Japan, Finland, Hungary, Paraguay, Uruguay, Canada, Honduras, and Columbia. Dr. Dickman is a Besson performing artist.

Ken Calhoun

Ken Calhoun is a native of Philadelphia, Pa . One of the top banjo/rhythm guitar players in the country, Ken earned his BA degree in Music Ed at Florida Atlantic University, where he studied music theory with Dr. Bill Prince. During his 40+ year professional career, he has performed with the likes of Pavarotti, Howard Keel, The Riverboat Jazz Kings, J. B. Scott's Swingin' Allstars, the River City Rhythm Kings, the Original Salty Dogs, Kid Dutch's New Orleans Music, the Sizzlin' Syncopators, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony, the St. Johns River City Band, and many others. He has also played guitar/banjo in over 30 Broadway musical productions. Ken is featured on several recordings and is available as a private instructor.

 

 

William Prince

Bill Prince, a professor emeritus at the University of North Florida comes from a background rich in music.  He has performed with numerous bands and orchestras including Buddy Rich, Billy Maxted, Pee Wee Hunt, the NORAD Band, the Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Jacksonville Symphonies and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra.  He has also performed with a number of well-known big bands including Xavier Cugat, Ray Anthony, Tex Beneke, Les and Larry Elgart, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey and Louis Bellson.  He has appeared on TV shows in the United States, Canada, Japan, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador.  

 

Bill has performed on over 50 albums including his The Best Kept Secret in Jazz.  He can currently be heard on Duffy Jackson's CD, Swing! Swing! Swing!, Buddy Rich's CDs, Mercy Mercy, and The Best of Buddy Rich.  In more recent years Bill has developed a cabaret show that he performs on cruise ships around the world.

David Steinmeyer

 

Dave is one of the most sought after jazz trombonists. You mention his name around any “name” trombonist and you get nothing but praise and smiles. “Stumpy”, as he is known to his associates, is truly a musician’s musician. Among Dave’s credits are the following: 28 years as a musician in the United States Air Force, with 24 of those years playing lead trombone with the world famous Airmen of Note (the big band started by Glenn Miller). He spent the last 10 years of his tenure as the “Note’s” director. During his days with the “Note” the band played a weekly live radio show in Washington, D.C. and traveled to Los Angeles three times a year to record albums with many famous musical stars including Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Patrick Williams, J.J. Johnson, Lou Rawls and Diane Schuur.

 

Dave has produced 10 big band jazz albums with the Airmen of Note. He performed at the Sydney Opera House, The Kennedy Center, and the White House. Dave Steinmeyer and Alan Raph co-authored the book “Beyond Boundaries” (Kendor) which includes CD interviews and discussions on topics such as range and style. Dave is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Florida.

Eric Mason

Eric David Mason is a graduate of the Jamaica School of Music and one of the first graduates of the UNF Jazz Program. He was one of the founding members of the River City Rhythm Kings who won the Southern Comfort International Dixieland Competition and toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Central America. Well versed a multitude of styles including jazz, reggae, rock, country, and others, he has appeared on shows such as Good Morning America, The Today Show, PBS, VH1, River City Live, and Fantastico with a variety of different groups.

 

He has also performed at numerous music festivals including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Reggae Sunsplash, Suncoast Jazz Festival, Savannah Jazz Festival, Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, Bix Beiderbeck Festival, Sun Fest, Meeting of the Minds, and more. In a career spanning over 30 years, he has played drums for Toots and the Maytals, Ira Sullivan, Clark Terry, James Moody, Percy Sledge, The Drifters, The Dukes of Dixieland, JJ Grey & Mofro, Squidly Cole, and many others. He is currently a freelance drummer playing regularly with the River City Rhythm Kings, The TBA Big Band, Windjammer, and Jimmy Parrish & The Waves.

Roy McCance

-81 year old native of Jacksonville, Fl.  FSU graduate, Jacksonville U. Mats.  USAF Band Washington,D.C.  School Band director 30 years in Jacksonville.  Retired 1991.
